Gateway Interactive bring Spectra to the Xbox One on July 10th!

Hi everyone, I’m Jenny Eckloff from Gateway Interactive, a small, independent games development studio about to launch our debut game Spectra on Xbox One!

Spectra is a dynamic twitch racing game where the player blasts their nimble ship down procedurally generated intricate ribbons of light in time to the energetic beats and original soundtrack by chiptune artist legend Chipzel (Super Hexagon, Size Does Matter, Interstellaria).

It all started with the music! Louis met chiptune artist Chipzel at GDC and we became hooked on her energetic and melodic electronic dance music. Its style by nature sounds like it belongs within a game, it’s even made with Gameboys, and it just felt fitting! It was a simple case of emailing her and asking what she thought about our ideas and from that, Spectra was born! Chipzel has been awesome to work with. Her energy shines through her music and we like to think that the game reflects that. We want people to feel like they can move to the beat as they play and we’ve seen many a dance move from the players at the events we’ve taken Spectra to.

Spectra has transformed into a visually awesome, fun experience inspired by our own childhood gaming experiences such as Audiosurf, Wipeout and F-Zero, not to mention rainbow road from Mario Kart. Spectra is a veritable homage to arcade games of old and we wanted to create a game with a simple concept that anyone could pick up and play.

The game itself was in development for around 18 months and has been a whirlwind of excitement! We were blown away by the reception of the game at shows. We first took it to Insomnia50 and we had people queuing up to play, challenging their friends, and asking when it was being released.

Spectra originally came out on the Windows store and Windows phone, and what with our good working relationship with Microsoft, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to bring Spectra to the Xbox One. It’s been revamped to look worthy of a next-gen console, with crisper graphics and more vibrant colours. We’ve also incorporated achievements and a hardcore mode into the gameplay.

We cannot wait to launch Spectra; we are so excited to see what people think and we hope it gets a good reception from the community!
