Mulaka Brings the Tarahumara Culture to a New Medium

Mulaka is an action-adventure game with a story deeply rooted in Tarahumara culture. We’re excited to see the game release on Xbox One on Friday, March 2!

The Tarahumara are an indigenous people of northern Mexico, and studio Lienzo drew heavily on their mythology, history, and culture while developing the look, feel, and story of Mulaka.

Lienzo did a video series about their research into the Tarahumara, and how the culture inspired the game. As Adolfo Aguirre of Lienzo says at the end of the final episode, “We believe that video games are really the best medium for storytelling. So with Mulaka, what we want is to engage people in the legend, engage people in the stories of this culture.”

Chapter 1 of the video series focuses on the culture of the Tarahumara, and how it’s incorporated into Mulaka.

Chapter 2 looks at Tarahumara mythology, and how these myths inspired many of the creatures and enemies within the game:

Chapter 3 introduces how Lienzo took inspiration from Tarahumara culture and applied it to the story and gameplay of Mulaka (and sneak in a bit of learning, too!)

You can pre-order Mulaka now for Xbox One—the game launches on Friday!
